You can configure any YouTube video you include within a Web page to play automatically by adding just 11 characters to its embed code. By default, the code that YouTube recommends and makes available does not provide a way to command a video to play automatically once a Web page loads. Fortunately, YouTube still provides the option to use the older, less compatible "" tag video embedding format which allows you to auto-play a video.

1

Launch your Web browser and go to Youtube.com. Play the video you want to embed on YouTube.

2

Click the "Share" button below the video.

3

Click the "Embed" button. Check the box next to the text "Use old embed code."

4

Click your mouse in the input box containing the embed code. Type "Ctrl-C" to copy the code.

5

Launch Notepad or your Web page editor. Load the Web page to which you want to add the video.

6

Click your mouse in the section of the HTML code you want to the video to play within. Type "Ctrl-V" to paste the code.

7

Locate the two sections of the embed code which contain the URL or Web address of the YouTube video. One address is attached to the "value" attribute while the other belongs to the "src" attribute.

8

Click your mouse to create an insertion point at the last character of the Web address or URL assigned to "value".

9

Type "&autoplay=1" after the last character before the end quotes.

10

Type "&autoplay=1" after the last character of the Web address belonging to the "src" attribute as well.

11

Type "Ctrl-S" to save your changes.

Tips

  • You can set the size of the frame in which your video displays by using YouTube's predefined size options. Standard video sizes range from a width of 560 to 1280 pixels. You can also set an arbitrary width or height for your video by using YouTube's "Custom" option. In addition, you can manually change the height and width of your video by directly editing the embed code.

Warnings

  • Users viewing videos on your website embedded using the older "" method may not be able to view the video at all if their device does have the proper video player plug-in installed. The current "" method works better with devices that support the newer HTML5 standard. YouTube can be viewed by HTML5-compatible PCs, smartphones and mobile devices that support either Adobe Flash, MP4, OGG or WEBM video formats.
