Types of S3 Storage Classes.

Amazon S3 offers a range of storage classes designed for different use cases. These provide us the storage for data that is rarely used, doesn’t require instant access, long-term archive, digital preservation, and many more. All Amazon S3 storage classes have a high level of reliability and support SSL data encryption during transmission, but differ by their cost.S3 also regularly verifies the integrity of your data using checksums and provides auto healing capability. S3 storage classes allows lifecycle management/policy for automatic migration of objects for cost savings.

The different storage classes provided are:

  • S3 Standard
  • S3 Standard-IA
  • S3 Intelligent-Tiering
  • S3 One Zone-IA
  • S3 Glacier
  • S3 Glacier Deep Archive
  • S3 Outposts

S3 Standard [General purpose]

  • S3 Standard is the default storage class, if nothing is specified during upload.
  • S3 Standard offers high durability, availability, and performance object storage for frequently accessed data.
  • S3 Standard delivers low latency and high throughput.
  • S3 Standard has a wide range of use cases from cloud applications ,dynamic websites, web services, websites hosting, big data analytics, mobile gaming, and content distribution.
  • S3 Standard is the most expensive storage class among all others.
  • Designed for durability of 99.999999999% of objects across multiple Availability Zones.
  • Data is stored in multiple locations. S3 standard is Resilient against events that impact an entire Availability Zone and is designed to sustain the loss of data in a two facilities.
  • Designed for 99.99% availability over a given year
  • Supports SSL for data in transit and encryption of data at rest.

S3 Intelligent Tiering [Unknown or changing access]

  • S3 Intelligent Tiering storage class is designed to optimize storage costs by automatically moving data to the most cost-effective storage access tier, without performance impact or operational overhead.
  • Delivers automatic cost savings by moving data on a granular object level between two access tiers

— →one tier that is optimized for frequent access and

— →another lower-cost tier that is optimized for infrequently accessed data.

  • a frequent access tier and a lower-cost infrequent access tier, when access patterns change.
  • Ideal to optimize storage costs automatically for long-lived data when access patterns are unknown or unpredictable.
  • For a small monthly monitoring and automation fee per object, S3 moves objects that have not been accessed for 30 consecutive days to the infrequent access tier. If the object is accessed then it is automatically moved back to the frequent access tier.
  • No retrieval fees or additional tiering fees are using the S3 Intelligent-Tiering storage class.
  • Suitable for larger objects greater than 128 KB [smaller objects are charged for 128 KB only] kept for at least 30 days [charged for minimum 30 days]
  • Low latency and high throughput performance.
  • The durability of 99.999999999% and availability of 99.99% availability over a given year of objects across AZs.
  • Automatically moves the data between two access tiers. [Infrequent Access and Frequent Access].
  • Backed with the Amazon S3 Service Level Agreement for availability.
  • No minimum storage duration.

S3 Standard-IA [ Infrequent access]

  • S3 Standard-Infrequent Access storage class is optimized for long-lived and less frequently accessed data. for e.g. for backups and older data where access is limited, but the use case still demands high performance.
  • Ideal for use for the primary or only copy of data that can’t be recreated.
  • High durability, Low latency and high throughput performance of S3 Standard but has a low per GB storage price and per GB retrieval fee. .
  • Designed for durability of 99.999999999% of objects across multiple Availability Zones.
  • The S3 Standard-IA is ideal for backups, long-term storage, and as a data store for disaster recovery.
  • Data stored redundantly across multiple geographically separated AZs and are resilient to the loss of an Availability Zone.
  • offers greater availability and resiliency than the ONEZONE_IA class.
  • Objects are available for real-time access.
  • Suitable for larger objects greater than 128 KB [smaller objects are charged for 128 KB only] kept for at least 30 days [charged for minimum 30 days]
  • Designed for 99.999999999% i.e. 11 9’s Durability of objects across AZs
  • Designed for 99.9% availability over a given year.
  • Less expensive than S3 Standard storage.

S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access [S3 One Zone-IA]

  • S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access storage classes are designed for long-lived and infrequently accessed data, but available for millisecond access [similar to the STANDARD and STANDARD_IA storage class].
  • Ideal when the data can be recreated if the AZ fails, and for object replicas when setting cross-region replication [CRR].
  • Objects are available for real-time access.
  • Suitable for larger objects greater than 128 KB [smaller objects are charged for 128 KB only] kept for at least 30 days [charged for minimum 30 days]
  • Since the other S3 storage class store data in a minimum of 3 Availability Zones [AZ], S3 One Zone-IAStores the object data in only one AZ, which makes it less expensive and the costs 20% lesser than the Standard-Infrequent Access
  • Data is not resilient to the physical loss of the AZ resulting from disasters, such as earthquakes and floods.
  • One Zone-Infrequent Access storage class is as durable as Standard-Infrequent Access, but it is less available and less resilient.
  • Designed for 99.999999999% i.e. 11 9’s Durability of objects in a single AZ
  • Designed for 99.5% availability over a given year
  • S3 charges a retrieval fee for these objects, so they are most suitable for infrequently accessed data.

S3 Glacier [Archive]

  • GLACIER storage class is suitable for low cost data archiving where data access is infrequent and retrieval time of minutes to hours is acceptable.
  • Storage class has a minimum storage duration period of 90 days
  • Provides configurable retrieval times, from minutes to hours
  • For accessing GLACIER objects,

→object must be restored which can taken anywhere between minutes to hours

→ objects are only available for the time period [number of days] specified during the restoration request

→ object’s storage class remains GLACIER

→ charges are levied for both the archive [GLACIER rate] and the copy restored temporarily

  • Vault Lock feature enforces compliance via a lockable policy
  • Offers the same durability and resiliency as the STANDARD storage class
  • Designed for 99.999999999% i.e. 11 9’s Durability of objects across AZs
  • Designed for 99.9% availability over a given year

S3 Glacier Deep Archive

  • Glacier Deep Archive storage class provides lowest cost data archiving where data access is infrequent and retrieval time of hours is acceptable.
  • Has a minimum storage duration period of 180 days and can be accessed in at a default retrieval time of 12 hours.
  • Supports long-term retention and digital preservation for data that may be accessed once or twice in a year
  • Designed for 99.999999999% i.e. 11 9’s Durability of objects across AZs
  • Designed for 99.9% availability over a given year
  • DEEP_ARCHIVE retrieval costs can be reduced by using bulk retrieval, which returns data within 48 hours.
  • Ideal alternative to magnetic tape libraries.
  • It is ideal for those industries which store data for 5–10 years or longer like healthcare, finance, etc. It can also be used for backup and disaster recovery.
  • Retrieval costs can be reduced by using bulk retrieval.

S3 on Outposts

  • S3 on Outposts provides object storage to our on-premises AWS outposts environment.
  • S3 on Outposts makes it easy to store, retrieve, secure, control access, tag, and report on the data.
  • It is ideal for workloads with local data residency requirements, and to satisfy demanding performance needs by keeping data close to on-premises.
  • S3 Object compatibility and bucket management is through S3 SDK
  • For durable and redundant storage of data on Outposts.
  • S3 on Outposts will give users 48TB or 96TB of S3 storage capacity, with up 100 buckets on each Outpost.
  • Designed to durably and redundantly store data on your Outposts.
  • Encryption using SSE-S3 and SSE-C.
  • Authentication and authorization using IAM, and S3 Access Points.
  • Transfer data to AWS Regions using AWS DataSync.
  • S3 Lifecycle expiration actions.
