Cursor not blinking Remote Desktop

When accessing HTML5 RDP bookmark cursor is not blinking, instead it is always on.

It is a default RDP cursor bahaviour

When using regular RDP [mstsc.exe] the cursor shows as always on by default.

HTML5 bookmark cursor will behave in the same way as the regular RDP cursor. To make the customer blink in HTML5 RDP bookmark and regular RDP please follow the Microsoft article below:

  • Secure Mobile Access > SMA 100 Series

  • Have you tried a different thin client?

Might be a driver issue?Have you tried a different mouse?

  • No. I'd have to buy a different one to do that.

  • Anyone ever have misbehaving cursor issues cleared up by adjusting hardware acceleration...? Sounds crazy but give it a look. This talks about gaming but also may help:

  • Sorry, I failed to mention it's a Hyper-V Machine so no hardware acceleration setting and pointer trails are off.

  • Have you turned off the pointer shadow?

  • Yes, pointer shadow is off.

Why would a blinking cursor configured in IBM Personal Communications not work under Windows Terminal Services and other Virtualization environments?

IBM Personal Communications emulator session has been configured for cursor blinking, using the following menu options: Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Display Setup... -> Cursor -> Blink

However, the emulator session is accessed through Remote Desktop client or Citrix virtualization client [such as XenDesktop or XenApp], the cursor would not blink.

Cursor blinking is disabled by default in Windows Terminal Services sessions starting with Windows Server 2003. This is true with other virtualization environments such as Citrix XenDesktop, Citrix XenApp. To enabled cursor blinking, please follow the below instructions:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  4. Type CursorBlinkEnable, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click CursorBlinkEnable, and then click Modify.
  6. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the emulator session.

Warning: Using Registry Editor incorrectly may cause serious problems, including reinstallation of the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems caused by incorrect use of the Windows Registry. Using Registry Editor is at your own risk.

Author Topic: Blinking cursor during remote desktop connection  [Read 11181 times]

I wrote a blog post a while back about the disappearing mouse cursor in Visual Studio on virtual machines that I’d connect to using remote desktop. It seems the problem is more widespread and affects most input or editing controls across many applications in the remote desktop session. For example the mouse cursor disappears in Notepad, Word, Excel and other applications.

Thankfully the fix is a pretty simple one. On the guest machine [that you are remoting into] simply edit the current Windows theme and change the mouse cursor.

In the Mouse properties window, change the Scheme to Windows Black [system scheme]

Say hello to your cursor when editing text again!
