- 1450: The Duke of Bavaria, Louis IX, issues an order which expels Jews from Lower Bavaria.

- 1607: Venetian scientist and statesman Paolo Sarpi survives fifteen stiletto thrusts by assassins sent by Pope Paul V.

- 1982: A nationwide product recall is done by Johnson & Johnson of all of its Tylenol products when several bottles are found in Chicago that had been laced with cyanide and resulted in the death of seven people.
- 1984: Aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, Marc Garneau becomes the first Canadian in space on this day.
