Test Yourself 1. Describe bottom-up (data-driven) processing as if you were talking to a student studying introductory psychology. Use your own words in this description, and use examples from the material in this chapter. Which approaches to shape perception seem most dependent on data-driven processes? What role do these processes play in the particular approaches?

What is bottom up processing in psychology?Bottom-up processing is the process of 'sensation', whereby the input of sensory information from the external environment is received by our sensory receptors. Perception is how our brains choose, organize, and interpret these sensations.
What is top down processing psychology? For example, a standard introductory psychology textbook provides the following definition: “Top-down processing is how knowledge, expectations, or past experiences shape the interpretation of sensory information” (Gazzaniga, Heatherton, & Halpern, 2016, p. 173).
Why did researchers begin using introspection in the late 1800s?By the end of the 19th century: Psychology acquired a new definition: “the science of mental life, both of its phenomena and their conditions” (James, 1890) Introspection was developed to expose the mind to scientific research.
What prediction could you make based on the recognition via multiple views approach to object recognition? What prediction could you make on the basis of the "recognition-via-multiple-views" approach to object recognition? It will be harder to recognize an object from some vantage points than from others.
