  • Cause

This may be caused by the account used to install the software. There is a known issue installing software as the built-in Domain Administrator account (DomainName\Administrator).

  • Resolution

Log into the machine with a different Domain Administrator account, other than the built-in “Administrator” account, and run the installation again.

@shun2wan thanks for asking for the log, it confirmed my suspicion.

The action that fails in the msi is the "recreation of junctions" (which is quite necessary).
However, if @tdkelly can download that aforementioned zip, unpacks it and runs "jasp.exe" it should do the same things.

And then we can see whether it works if ran outside the msi.

As @boutinb questions, what is different between the windows pcs?
Are some of them another version?
Or are they perhaps managed by some it-department?
Or running remotely?

I don't know, but there must be something different that causes this issue.

Issue:

While trying to install Nastran the error message below appears and after pressing OK a generic 1603 error message such as one of the following is displayed:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Install error: Autodesk Inventor Nastran 2022
The install couldn't finish.
Error 1603

Causes:

  • Missing path in the environment variable.
  • Corrupted Installer.
  • Corrupted Registries entry.
  • Antivirus is conflicting with the install.

Solution:

In order to fix the issue check the Windows environment variable PATH. If "C:\Windows\system32" is missing, add it by doing the following:

  1. From the Windows search command on the Task Bar, start typing environment.
  2. When located, choose the option "Edit the system environment variables" to display the "System Properties" dialog.
  3. Choose "Environment Variables...".
  4. The PATH variable will exist in the User variables list and System variables (See Figure 1).
  5. Edit each one to see if "C:\Windows\system32" exists (See Figure 2).
  6. Add the folder name to the system variables if it is missing from both lists.
  7. Click OK to close all dialogs.
  8. Repeat the installation.

Figure 1: The PATH variable exists for the user and system variables. Each list may contain different entries.

Figure 2: Confirm that C:\Windows\system32 exists in one of the lists. Note that "C:\Windows" may be represented as %SystemRoot% as shown here (to indicate where Windows is installed).

If the above solution should not work, try also:

  • Check to see if software actually did install and is experincing issue as per: Nastran button does not appear on the Environment tab in Inventor.
  • Re-download affected from the Autodesk Account by using Browser Download method.
  • Perform a clean uninstall Autodesk software.
  • Make sure these steps are followed: Best practice for installing Autodesk Products.
  • Disable antivirus. Refer to: Autodesk Licensing Service: Known Conflicting Applications.

The "installer" folder resides in a protection area that is governed by UAC, as do all files/folders in the c:\windows directory...so you will want to temporarily disabled UAC to remove the corrupted MSI file. The quickest way to disable UAC is to click Start, select Run..., then type msconfig.

Why Windows 10 is not allowing to install programs?

Sometimes Windows 10 can't install programs when you are trying to install the program's update. To avoid this situation, you can try uninstalling the previous version of the app. Here you open the Settings window, and then go to Apps > Apps & features, and select the problematic app, and click on Uninstall.
