You need to keep your ears to the ground and be conscious of the jobs that will be in demand and the ones that will disappear due to technology advances, automation or consumer preferences. Preparing for in-demand jobs in advance can enable IT professionals to negotiate higher salaries and build promising careers in the future. 

To help you set the right course for your tech career, here are six job profiles that are predicted to be in demand through the next 5 to 10 years and how to land them:

Information Security Analyst

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected future growth rate for Information Security Analyst jobs is 33.3% through 2030. The Bureau estimates that the job profile will feature about 16,300 openings each year until 2030, and employers will prefer to hire candidates who have professional certification.

Are you able to monitor complex computer networks for security risks? Do you have experience installing, upgrading, testing, analyzing and managing security systems, as well as penetration testing and techniques? Have you worked with patch management, firewalls, antivirus and Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems? These experiences can help you land this position. Additionally, you should also possess a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and strong analytical, communications and written skills. 

Software Developer

The projected future growth rate for software developer jobs is 22% through 2030, and for Mobile App Developer jobs, it is 30.7%.

In addition to knowing multiple programming languages, such as C#, C++, HTML, Java, Microsoft.Net and SQL Server, you will need strong analytical and communication skills to land a software developer job. A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in computer science, software engineering or other computer-related fields along with relevant certifications and work experience is a must to clinch a well-paying job.

Data Scientist

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the demand for data scientists will increase by 28% through 2026. Data scientists help organizations make business decisions based on data. Therefore, they are expected to be proficient in running statistical models, run algorithms, and master the most widely-used programming languages.

To become a successful data scientist, you must be proficient in statistics and mathematics and data visualization tools like Tableau and Power BI. Not only must you understand the business issues affecting your organization, but you will need strong communication skills to convey the results of your models to the organization’s decision-makers. 

Web Developer

The Dice 2022 Tech Salary Report’s list of the fastest-growing jobs by salary shows that the average wage for web developers increased 21.3% between 2020 and 2021, almost double the second-fastest-growing salary of DB administrators. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 8.53 million job openings for Full Stack Web developers by 2024. The projected future growth rate for all web developer jobs through 2030 is 13%.

Following are must-have skill sets that aspiring web developers should hone to build a successful career in the years ahead:

  • Robust front-end and back-end coding abilities
  • Mastery over popular programming languages
  • Ability to create custom web-based applications
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with clients and co-workers
  • Knowledge of web development tools like JavaScript, MySQL, CSS, AWS, and Ruby
  • Ability to deploy applications in the cloud

Database Administrator

The projected future growth rate for Database Administrator positions is 11% through 2026. To qualify for this position, you will need a Bachelor’s degree in management information systems or other computer-related fields. You should be able to demonstrate proficiency in multiple database languages and the programming languages that you will encounter on the job. Your skills should include data management, analysis and reporting.

Computer Systems Analyst

The projected future growth rate for Computer Systems Analyst positions is 9% through 2026. 

To qualify for this position, you must think creatively and have strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills. You will need to demonstrate your ability to improve an organization’s computer systems and procedures to operate more efficiently and effectively. In addition to data analysis and programming skills, you should have working experience in business and technical analysis and project management. Employers also look for a Bachelor’s degree in either computer science or information technology.
