In the past couple of years, Ford redesigned the F-150 and finally released the all-electric F-150 Lightning, so it was high time for an F-Series Super Duty overhaul. The hard-working trucks got what they needed for the 2023 model year. Ford announced a more powerful line of heavy-duty trucks with a load of available new tech, great standard safety features, and unique upfits to make the trucks more appropriate for specific industries.

The 2023 Super Duty is available in six trim levels, including XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. Four engines are on offer, and while Ford hasn’t elaborated on specs for the new powertrains, expect torque numbers that extend past the 1,000-pound-foot mark and impressive horsepower outputs.

How to Test a Car Battery with a Multimeter

When your car doesn’t start, often the battery is the culprit. Unfortunately, most vehicle owners do not check their battery until it fails. As preventative maintenance, the suggested best practice is to conduct a car battery voltage test regularly – at least twice per year – using a multimeter.

Someone once said that pickup trucks built America, and while it may not be historically accurate, heavy-duty workhorses have indeed contributed to the figurative building of a nation. With more than 50% market share in mining, construction, utility, and special services for Ford's Super Duty lineup, its popularity in the USA is unlikely to wane anytime soon. Automakers in the heavy-duty truck segment continue to jostle for the top spot, ticking the boxes for more muscle, more power, and more capability. Anticipation has been building since the most recent teasers from the Blue Oval about the new F-Series of Super Duty trucks - and now we finally get eyes on it. Reviewed here is the F-250, the entry point to Ford's Super Duty range, but there is nothing basic about this truck's ability to tow and haul almost anything you can throw at it.

When Is The Ford F-250 Super Duty Coming Out?

The Ford F-250 Super Duty release date is set for early 2023, according to the automaker, with some trims and features becoming available in spring of that year. Its rival, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, will be coming out at around the same time.

2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty Price And Competition

We haven't been given any indication as to pricing, but considering the latest Chevrolet Silverado HD is the one to beat, and based on the slew of updates for the new year, we can speculate that the price of the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty will probably be higher than the $39,445 base price we saw for 2022. The outgoing models topped out at under $90k in top-spec guise and without options.

While we wait for official MSRP figures to be released, we can also take a look at what the new 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD will cost - it breaks the $40k mark in its most basic configuration, so it won't be strange for the Ford truck to do the same. While the Chevy truck has historically been a good value proposition, albeit slightly bland, and brand loyalists are likely to remain with the Ford truck now that it has finally been updated, the facelifted 2024 Silverado HD threatens to upset the whole apple cart, with General Motors promising a top-class interior and loads of power.

New Ford F-250 Super Duty Exterior And Colors

At last, the F-Series has been redesigned inside and out - it hasn't seen any significant updates since 2017, so the refresh is highly anticipated. It may be a truck we'd recognize anywhere for what it is, but the alterations are welcome, anyway. Part of the extensive exterior upgrade is the seven new grille designs that not only provide aesthetic enhancements across the lineup, but also work to maximize cooling when the truck is under heavy strain. C-clamp exterior lighting underscores the wide and solid look of the front end, and LED headlights are available across the range. Ford says that the air pressure under the hood is reduced in the new model, too, thanks to long, functional side vents.

As usual, the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty can be had as a Regular Cab, SuperCab, or in Crew Cab configuration, with the latter two options allowing you to choose between an eight-foot cargo box or a 6 ¾ - foot box. The Regular Cab only comes with the longer bed.

F-250 trucks can be further customized by means of the available appearance packages that change up trims, wheel designs, and even paint combinations. The XL Off-Road Package adds 33-inch tires, a raised air dam, skid plates, and water-fording axle vent tubes. Similarly, the Tremor Off-Road Package adds a front-end lift, 35-inch Goodyear tires, and model-specific 18-inch wheels. Other exterior options include the Sport Appearance Package, which features a dark-painted grille, platform running boards, and larger, more rugged wheels; the Black Appearance Package does exactly what it says on the box - black accents are added to the exterior of the Ford F-250 Super Duty to help it stand out even more.

For 2023, Ford's exterior colors on the F-250 Super Duty include Race Red, Oxford White, Iconic Silver, Stone Gray, Agate Black, Antimatter Blue, and Carbonized Gray without asking for more money. At an added cost, you can have Rapid Red, Star White, or Azure Gray. And, in terms of wheel sizes, 17-, 18- and 20-inch items are available.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Dimensions

Dimensions on the Ford F-250 Super Duty can be a confusing bunch of numbers due to the variety of cab configurations, bed lengths, and wheelbase options. Wheelbase figures start at 141.1 inches on the 4x2 Regular Cab and top out at 175.9 for the long-wheelbase Crew Cabs. Overall length maxes out at 266.2 inches on the longest Crew Cab, while the 231.8-inch Regular Cab is the shortest of the bunch. In terms of height, the F-250 stands tallest at 81.6 inches in short wheelbase Crew Cab guise with 4x4; other variants are not quite as tall. It's a wide truck, too, at 80 inches across excluding the mirrors - 105.9 inches if you count those.

The minimum running ground clearance is 9.2 inches, while the long-wheelbase SuperCab and Crew Cabs have a full inch more on top of that. Those who intend to go off-roading or need to tackle rougher terrain with their 2023 F-250 Super Duty can rest assured that approach/breakover/departure angle are conducive in 4x4 guise. Ford hasn't release curb weight specifications for the new Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup truck, but the outgoing models weighed between 5,677 pounds and 7,538 lbs, which is par for the course in the segment.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Engine And Performance

The new F-Series targets the highest towing and payload figures in the class, and while we don't have specs for horsepower or torque just yet, we're likely to see some big numbers considering the automaker has verbalized the aim of beating rivals. With this in mind, the F-250 will be available with a choice of four engines, including an all-new gas unit we speculated about a while ago.

The new power plant is a 6.8-liter V8 naturally-aspirated gas engine, and it's accompanied by a new high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8. The former comes with more low-end torque than before, while the latter boasts a unique turbo, upgraded exhaust manifolds and tuning that Ford suggests will put this heavy-duty hauler at the top of the class in terms of outputs. We also see the 430-hp 7.3-liter V8 and the regular 1,050-lb-ft Power Stroke V8 diesel return, with the latter updated for longer maintenance intervals. Regardless of which engine you equip to your Ford F-250 Super Duty, a ten-speed automatic transmission does duty to move power to the rear wheels on lower trims. From the XLT trim upwards, all trucks have standard four-wheel drive.

As for 0-60 times, that's of less importance in a truck of this size, but it'll be quick enough to get you to work on time if you can find a way to squeeze through traffic.

Ford hasn't given a formal towing capacity figure, and in avoiding court cases due to false advertising, likely wants to ensure they get it right before putting it out there. However, the manufacturer has stipulated that it wants to tow and haul the most in the class, so we're expecting impressive figures here, in excess of the current 22,800-lbs gooseneck maximum. And to make towing even easier, new driver trailer-specific tech has been made available, including a 360-degree Trailer Camera System, a blind-spot information system for fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers, trailer navigation, and -in a first for the industry - a tailgate down camera and reverse sensing system.

A cool bonus is the availability of the Pro Power Onboard system to the F-250 - this system allows you to provide power externally, whether it's for a party or for work. There are also power outlets in the truck and cargo box.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Gas Mileage

Numbers matter in a segment where capability is the priority - but the downside to high-output figures is the equally high fuel consumption rates. We don't have the data for the two new powertrains yet, but the familiar 7.3-liter V8 from 2022 manages about 11 mpg combined in real-life testing. Highway figures are around 14.6 mpg. Owner reports indicate that the standard diesel motor returns around 14 mpg combined, too.

We know that gas tank size will depend on which engine you choose, along with body style - a 34-gallon tank is standard on both gas engines, but Crew Cabs with the longer wheelbase get a 48-gallon tank. For the regular diesel, a 29-gallon gas tank is standard on the Regular Cab and short-wheelbase Crew Cab, growing to 34 gallons with the long-wheelbase SuperCab and Crew Cab with its standard wheelbase. The only diesel with the 48-gallon tank is the Crew Cab with the longer wheelbase. The fuel capacity for the high-output diesel had not yet been published at the time of writing.

Ford F-250 Super Duty Interior And Cargo

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty interior is ostensibly the smartest one yet, and the cabin has been designed to be both functional and comfortable regardless of which row you are seated in. The center display measures eight inches on base models, while a 12-inch screen comes standard as you move up through the trim levels. Drivers can also customize the 12-inch digital cluster. Sound comes courtesy of Bang & Olufsen, with either eight speakers or 18, depending on trim.

In a segment first, the F-250 will have embedded 5G capability with faster mapping, Wi-Fi, and over-the-air updates. Unique tech worth mentioning is the all-new Trailer Navigation system that monitors routes that are the most efficient to take considering the size of the trailer hitched behind it.

There are also new safety features available, including intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, trailer theft alert, forward-reverse sensing, front and rear brake assist, and a full-color head-up display. Fleet owners can also enable Fleet Start Inhibit to select when the truck can be operated. And when you're tired of all the work, the Max Recline Seats fold almost completely flat so you can catch some shut-eye.

Speaking of seats, the Ford F-250 Super Duty will seat between two and six occupants, depending on how you choose to configure it. Historically, the Ford trucks have been near the top of the class in terms of space, although some rivals had the F-250 beat in terms of offering a well-rounded cabin. We expect lower trims to offer the tough vinyl upholstery suited to a workhorse, while the upper end of the lineup will likely have leather and plenty of soft-touch materials.

Cargo space at the back of the Ford F-250 Super Duty ranges between 65.4 cubic feet and 78.5 cubes depending on bed size, but payload capacity is likely to be improved for the new model year considering Ford's bold claims. We'll wait for Ford to release these figures to see how competitive they will be, but we assume the outgoing model's maximum of 3,520 pounds for Crew Cabs and 4,260 lbs on Regular variants will be soundly beaten.
