What type of research can prove causation?

In clinical medical research, causality is demonstrated by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Often, however, an RCT cannot be conducted for ethical reasons, and sometimes for practical reasons as well. In such cases, knowledge can be derived from an observational study instead.
Causation implies a cause-and-effect relationship between variables; a change in one variable 'causes' a change in the other. When two variables have a causal relationship, a change in the independent variable (or the 'cause') influences a change in the dependent variable (or the 'effect').

What conditions are necessary to confirm causality between an independent variable and dependent variable?

The cause (independent variable) must precede the effect (dependent variable) in time. The two variables are empirically correlated with one another. The observed empirical correlation between the two variables cannot be due to the influence of a third variable that causes the two under consideration.

Which the following method studies causality between variables quizlet?

Path analysis studies causality between variables.
