Who will host the Gold Cup 2023?

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — World Cup host Qatar is set to play in the Gold Cup next year in the United States after accepting an invitation from soccer’s governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The Asian Football Confederation issued a statement Thursday saying the Asian Cup champion will participate in the 2021 and 2023 Gold Cup tournaments as a guest under a memorandum of understanding signed in Bahrain in 2017.

“We saw the obvious opportunities for both confederations to help and improve each other both in terms of performances on the field — of teams, players and match officials as well as operations staff — and, just as importantly, the continued development of the game across our continents,” AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa said in a statement.

”Qatar ... can continue to grow their own knowledge of international football following on from last year’s AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 as well as the Copa America. We are sure everyone will benefit from Qatar’s presence in the competition.”

Qatar is the second team from Asia to play in the Gold Cup after South Korea, which participated in 2000 and 2002 before co-hosting the World Cup with Japan.

Qatar won its first Asian Cup title last year with a 3-1 win over Japan in the final in the United Arab Emirates. The Qatar national team is No. 55 in the FIFA world rankings, and is Asia’s fifth-highest ranked team behind Japan, Iran, South Korea and Australia.

The Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-based AFC said the involvement of Qatar in the Gold Cup provided a strong link between the organizing committees of the 2022 World Cup and the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the Concacaf region.

Qatar will join the 12 countries that have already secured places at the revamped Gold Cup and three qualifiers from the preliminary stage. The draw will be held Sept. 28.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be held from July 2-25, 2021, but was later rescheduled for July 10-Aug. 1.

It is likely that most top players will skip the tournament and be off for a break following World Cup qualifying in June and the start of 2021-22 European club seasons.

April 4 – Concacaf is sticking with the 12-team Gold Cup Prelims as the route to deciding the final places at the 16-team 2023 Gold Cup, with its Nations League.

The 2022/23 Nations League groups – which will be drawn today in Miami – will qualify 12 teams automatically to the Gold Cup finals as well as the 12 teams for the Gold Cup Prelims.

The group draw for the second edition of the Concacaf Nations League will see the continuation of a three League format, with home and away round robin play in the international match windows in June 2022 (double window) and March 2023. The Nations League Group Stage will be followed by the Concacaf Nations League Finals in June 2023 which will consist of semi-finals, third place match, and final. That will take place before the Gold Cup proper.

The Gold Cup Prelims were introduced in 2021 to provide a pathway to the finals after Covid had wiped out the 2020 international season. The Prelims were centralised as a knock-out tournament in Florida the week before the Gold Cup Finals proper kicked off. What was originally a fix to overcome the lost fixtures dues to the covid pandemic, turned into a huge success, opening up the Gold Cup nations who had never before had the Gold Cup tournament experience.

It is unclear whether the Prelims will qualify three of four teams for the Gold Cup group stages. Qatar are scheduled to participate but there is potentially a date clash with Asian Cup also due to be played in the Summer of 2023.
