1. doubts with file history and system image backup on Windows 10 Home

Hi, Please I need help with the following... there is a local disk in my laptop called Recovery and contains files that are used during Windows Push button reset and HP image recovery, with a used space amount of 12 GB out of a total space of 13, 6 GB. I have the following question about this local disk Recovery: ¿Should I choose this disk when doing the system image backup?

And this is another doubt about backups in general: ¿it's okay if I do both system image and file history backups on the same external hard drive?

    All help is welcome, thanks!

    :)

  2. System images and backups.

    Hi Arthur,

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per your query, I like to inform you that; if a copy of C drive on any external storage media/system partition cannot be used for system recovery purposes. You need to create System image backup using File history.

To create system image on Windows 10 follow the below methods.

    • Type File history in the search area on the taskbar and select File history.

    • Click on System image backup on the left bottom corner of the Window file history Window.

    • Click on Create System Image on the left panel of the System Image backup windows.

    • Select the driver, where you want to Create system Image.

    • Follow on screen instruction.

Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

  3. File History vs System Image Backup

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We appreciate your interest in the features of File History and System image Backup.

A system image is an exact copy of operating system. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of
your computer if your hard disk or computer ever stop working.

File History regularly backs up version of your files in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files available offline on your PC. Over time, you'll have a complete history of your files. For example, if you want to
restore an older version of a file (even if it wasn't deleted or lost), you can browse through a timeline, select the version you want, and restore it.

The main difference is the System image back up restores the entire OS along with files and settings, whereas File History is only restricted to file backup and there is no difference with the folders apart from the purpose.

Whereas File History is designed to only backup your personal files, a system image backup creates a recoverable clone of your operating system's drive. In the future, you can use the disk image to recover your PC, even if it's unbootable or Windows won't start.
