U.s. 2023 ford ranger

We know what the Ford Ranger will look like

Ford unveiled the global Ranger last November. The U.S. version should look nearly identical. The significant change will be a boxier, more sculpted look that will be more on-trend for a modern truck. It will also have styling cues that tie it in visually with the new F-150 and Maverick pickups.

We know a Ford Ranger Raptor is coming

When Ford brought the current-gen Ranger back to America, they did not bring the Ranger Raptor version. But that's about to change. Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed the Ranger Raptor would be coming to the U.S. with the next generation. It should be similar to the global model Ford revealed in February.

Which engines will the new Ford Ranger get?

Ford launched the Global Ranger with three engine options. All three were diesels and unlikely to make it to the American market. So there isn't much of a preview to work from there.

The best bet is that Ford will track with the Bronco for its base engine, returning the turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four. The global Ranger Raptor is getting a 392 hp twin-turbo V6. We would bet that the American version receives the same engine.

Will the Ford Ranger get hybrid and electric motors?

Could the new Ford Ranger get a long bed SuperCrew version?

Ford Authority uncovered spy photos of new Rangers testing with what appears to be a Ranger testing with the larger SuperCrew cab and the longer six-foot bed. On the current model, you must have the smaller SuperCab configuration to get the longer bed.

Overview

Ford's mid-size Ranger pickup truck will be redesigned for the 2023 model year. It adopts bolder front-end styling inspired by the larger F-150. While Ford has said it will offer the new Ranger with a turbodiesel V-6 in some markets, we expect the American version will be powered by the same turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine as the current truck with rear-wheel drive as standard. A four-wheel drive system is optional, and we could see a hybrid powertrain option join the lineup too—but we're most excited about the prospect of a high-performance Raptor variant. There will be two distinct body styles: a four-door crew cab and an extended cab model with two rear half-doors. The cabin receives a similar makeover, featuring a large, vertically-oriented infotainment system similar to what's found in the Edge SUV.

What's New for 2023?

This next-generation Ranger will be all-new, and we expect it to go on sale in 2022 as a 2023 model.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Without more details about the new Ranger's pricing or its standard and optional features, we can't make a recommendation on which one is the best value. But we'd suggest the roomier crew cab model for anyone who's planning on using the rear seat for toting passengers. When more information becomes available, we'll update this story with details.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

While Ford could pull a switcheroo, we think the new Ranger will come with the same turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder as the outgoing model. In our experience, this engine provides ample power to hustle the mid-size truck around, and we don't expect that to change with the new model. Ford says it will offer a turbodiesel V-6 in other markets but we don't think it will make its way to North America. A variety of transmissions are available, including a six-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic, but we think Ford will stick with the 10-speed as standard equipment on Rangers in the U.S.

      Towing and Payload Capacity

The current model is capable of towing up to 7500 pounds, which puts it near the top of its class for mid-size pickups. We expect the new model to offer similar capability.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Ranger's cabin receives a modern look with an available digital gauge display, textured dashboard trim, and honey-comb patterned air vents. Most of the truck's various controls and buttons have been digitized and are now part of the infotainment system. Ford has incorporated several interior storage solutions into the new Ranger's interior design, including a hidden upper glovebox in the dashboard, larger door pocket cubbies, and storage located under the truck's rear seat.

      Infotainment and Connectivity

A large 10.1-inch infotainment display is standard across the Ranger lineup for 2023, and buyers with a focus on tech can upgrade to an even bigger, vertically-oriented 12.1-inch screen. Ford's latest Sync 4 interface runs on both and provides access to the Ranger's various controls, including activating a new zone-lighting feature that turns on lights on the outside of the truck to light a jobsite or provide illumination to finish setting up camp in the dark. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely be standard and we expect extras such as in-dash navigation, a B&O Play stereo system, and SiriusXM satellite radio to also be offered.

As more information becomes available, we'll update this story with more details about:

      • Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
      • Infotainment and Connectivity
      • Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
      • Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Will the 2023 Ford Ranger be available in the US?

The next-generation 2023 Ford Ranger possesses a brand-new design and is expected to arrive at Brandon Ford in the Fourth Quarter of 2022. When it arrives at dealerships, the 2023 Ford Ranger is expected to be available in Extended Cab and SuperCrew Cab body styles with 6-foot and 5-foot bed length options.

      When can I order a 2023 Ranger?

The 2023 Ford Ranger order banks are now open!

What can I expect from a 2023 Ford Ranger?

We expect the Ranger's 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 and 10-speed automatic transmission to carry over. The powertrain may get slight increases in output over its current 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and shift performance or ratios in the 10-speed auto could be updated.

Is the 2023 Ford Ranger worth waiting for?

While the 2022 Ford F-150 has its fair share of Raptor models, from the 450-horsepower 'regular' to the 5.2L Supercharged Raptor R, it's the smaller 2023 Ranger Raptor that piques our interest. In fact, we reckon this off-road-ready Ranger has so much potential that it's worth waiting for its arrival here.
